Dr. Donald Hayes is Chair of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Contruction at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Prior to assuming this position in August 2011, Dr. Hayes served as the Director of the Insitute for Costal Ecology and Engineering and Endowed Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He began his career as a Research Civil Engineer with the US Army Corps of Engineers Research and Development Center in Vicksburg, MS. He has also been a faculty member at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of Utah.

Dr. Hayes holds BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering from Mississippi State University and a PhD in Civil Engineering from Colorado State University with an emphasis in Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Planning and Management. He is a registered Professional Engineer in Mississippi, Louisiana and Nevada, and Diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and on the Board of Directors of the Western Dredging Association

Dr. Hayes is widely recognized for his work on contaminated sediment management, especiialy on issues related to dredging, residual sediments, water quality impacts, modeling, and post-dredging sediment management. He has also worked extensively on wetland and coastal restoration, authoring the Corps of Engineers Wetland Restoration Handbook in 2005. He has published extensively on these topics and holds multiple patents. He has served as an expert witness for numerous cases from coast to coast and as an expert consultant to the US Environmental Protection Agency, US Department of Justice, US Army Corps of Engineers, multiple state agencies, and numerous private industries. He frequently works with the Battelle on dredging related project reviews for the US Army Corps of Engineers.
